The Matrix program currently offers professional coaching and a higher level of play and has teams for athletes born in years 2004 through 2012. Next year, we plan to add more teams, for birth years 2013 and 2014, and possibly 2015 . The Development Program is a progressive curriculum where players will receive age-appropriate training and playing opportunities under the direction of dedicated and licensed coaches. The focus is on the joy of play and the development of technical skills, and ultimately, to provide a life long passion for soccer in every child that comes through our ranks.
Matrix is a select team, building competitive teams with player tryouts. Matrix teams play in the SoCal Soccer League (www.socalsoccerleague.org), which consists of multiple clubs across all of Southern California. This includes teams at many different competition levels.
North Park Matrix is centered in North Park and surrounding communities, with practices and home games held in the North Park area (including Morley Field and Balboa Stadium). Away games are held throughout San Diego, dependent on the bracket under which the team falls under the SoCal Soccer League
Practices are typically 2-3 times per week, depending on the team. Games are Saturdays and/or Sundays.
The 2022 Main season lasts from September 10 to November 13. In January/February 2023, youngers teams (non-high school age) have the option of playing in the State Cup, a large end of season tournament for all of SoCal. Olders teams (high school age) may participate in State Cup after the end of the high school (CIF) season, in March/April 2023. Matrix teams typically practice and play year round, except high school age teams typically take a break during the high school soccer season of late November through mid-February, since many high school age Matrix players also play high school soccer. While there are breaks in the season, teams may elect to participate in spring leagues, showcase tournaments, etc. during the year. Many Matrix athletes also participate in other spring sports and participate with their Matrix teams when they can in the off-season.
Teams are tryout based and at the discretion of the coach. Teams are based on a single birth year (ie, boys born in 2011 are on the B2011 team). If there is enough interest and more than one coach, a birth year may have more than one team – forming teams in different flights (competition level in SoCal). Tryouts for the 2023 season will be the first week of December for the younger age groups. High school aged athletes have a later tryout, scheduling in process for early 2023.
The cost for the 2022-23 year (July through June) was $750. This was inclusive of uniforms, referee fees, and State Cup fees. Most other clubs start at $2,000 plus
Just like AYSO Core, Matrix is all volunteer run. We work to identify coaches before tryouts. Ultimately, we need a volunteer coach to run the team.
